What each one is
Transparent film is a thin, flexible mesh of LED strips on a transparent substrate, applied directly to existing glass. Transparent cabinet is a rigid panel with an aluminium frame, mounted in front of or inside the glazing. Both are typically 50 to 90 percent transparent depending on pitch.
The light transmission question
Film on glass reduces the glass's own transparency by 10 to 20 percent even when the LEDs are off, because the substrate and the adhesive layer are not perfectly clear. A cabinet leaves a gap, so the glass stays as clear as it was, but the cabinet frame creates a visible grid.
The heat question
This is the one that decides most projects. Film is bonded to glass, so the LED heat goes into the glass. In a south-facing window in a hot climate, the glass can reach 60 degrees and the film's adhesive is the weakest part. A cabinet has an air gap and can be ventilated behind.
The installation question
Film goes up in hours and can be applied to glass you do not own, which matters for leased retail space. A cabinet needs structure, and in a curtain wall it usually needs a freestanding frame because you cannot drill into the mullions.
The comparison
| Item | Film | Cabinet |
|---|---|---|
| Transparency, off | 80 – 90% of glass | Glass unchanged, grid visible |
| Installation time | Hours | Days |
| Heat path | Into the glass | Ventilated gap |
| Repair | Replace a strip section | Replace a module |
| Lease friendly | Yes, removable | Usually not |
| Price | Lower | 20 – 40% higher |
Where film is the right answer
Leased shopfronts, temporary campaigns, interior glass partitions, and windows where the client cannot add structure. Also where the install has to happen overnight without closing the shop.
Where the cabinet wins
South and west facing exterior glass in hot climates, permanent installations, and any window where the screen will run 16 hours a day. The ventilated gap is not a luxury; it is what makes the product last.
The question to ask first
Who owns the glass, and which direction does it face? Those two answers eliminate one option in most projects before price is even discussed.
